In the world of online marketing, there are a lot of shady characters. This is true in all professions, to an extent, but some of the things that the less-desirable internet marketers offer are nothing more than firewater.

One of these things is something we have come across three times recently, from three different ‘marketers’. It was my reason to write this blog post.

And that first scam is the video of a ‘customer’ giving a testimonial on how great your business is. The usual charge for this service is $2000+, and it consists of filming someone talking about your service/business and saying how great you are. This video is then uploaded to youtube or a similar video service and even then posted back onto your website. How can this possibly drive traffic to your site? By the few embedded tags on youtube? Just because you have a video online doesn’t mean you are going to see anything from it. $2000 can buy a lot of traffic on Google and Facebook. And those hits are going to give you business a lot more than a testimonial video will ever do.

The second big scam are monthly SEO charges. I can’t tell you how many times I will come across someone who is paying for monthly SEO, and when viewing their website source, the SEO is done poorly or not at all. Just on Thursday I had someone in the office who was paying $125 a month for SEO, and his website has a meta description but no other SEO done at all. Now, SEO as a whole is not a scam. And when done right it can help drive traffic. But just doing SEO doesn’t work anymore. It needs to be a part of a bigger package.

The third scam is simple. Guarantees. Anyone who promises ‘at least’ a number of hits or Facebook Fans or Twitter followers is either outright lying or buying those followers. Internet marketing is not guaranteed, and what works for one company may not work for another. While something can be done for everyone, it might take time to find out what works. If someone tells you you’ll get 30% more traffic in the first month or add 500 Facebook fans in one month, they are lying. Of course there is something that does work, but it takes trial and error to get there.
